Library

Welcome to the Walter Brown Elementary School Library. My name is Mrs. Bernaciak and I am your librarian. I can be contacted at the school between the hours of 7:15 A.M-4:00 P.M by phone or anytime through email to: jbernaciak@turlock.k12.ca.us.

Classes typically visit the library once a week. When students are off-track I encourage them to visit the library on Wednesday afternoons between 1:00-3:00 P.M., specifically for the purpose of checking out books and/or taking Accelerated Reader quizzes. Although I can't allow the students to stay and read, I highly recommend that they utilize this opportunity.

Lists of Accelerated Reader titles that we currently have quizzes for may be downloaded by clicking on the following links. (Please be aware that these are very large files of over 60 pages and both are approximately 1MB in size. They will require a considerable amount of time to download unless you have broadband cable or DSL service.) These lists, one by title order and the other by reading level, are also on file at the Turlock Public Library.

Accelerated Reader is a computer software program that most of our teachers use to some extent. This program monitors the student's reading and gives feedback to both the student and the teacher on the student's performance.

To start the process, a teacher administers the Star Test to each student to determine their reading level. When a child knows what their reading level is, he/she is able to select a title from within a range and begin reading. For example, a child may have a range of 3.8 - 4.6. This simply means that they may choose books that are leveled from 3rd grade, 8 months to 4th grade, 6 months. When a child completes a book, he/she is able to take a quiz that is given electronically. This quiz may be taken in the classroom, the computer lab, or at the student workstations in the library. When the quiz is completed the software computes the student's score and stores the result in its database. It gives the student and teacher immediate information on their performance.

Every book that has an Accelerated Reader quiz available also has a point value assigned. This point value is based on the difficulty of the book and its length. Students earn points when they pass the reading quizzes. To determine how many points a student earns for a quiz, Accelerated Reader uses the student's score on the quiz and the quiz's point value. At our school 70% and above is considered passing. If a student is unable to pass the quizzes it generally means they are choosing books above their level. At Brown School once a student has taken a quiz they are not able to take it again. We want the children at our school to be successful and to develop a life-long love of reading. So as not to become frustrated or discouraged, it is recommended that a student start reading books at the easier end of the assigned reading range and work their way up.

I hope this information has been helpful to you. Please let me know how I can be of assistance to you, and Happy Reading!
